Pond Air Pumps Compared: Hozelock, PondXpert, Blagdon and Evolution Aqua

PondXpert SolarAir Float Pump floating on a garden pond

Fish need oxygen, and a pond does not always provide enough on its own. A small air pump sitting beside the pond, feeding air stones on the bottom, is one of the simplest ways to add more. Pond specialists stress that it matters most in densely stocked ponds and in summer, when oxygen levels drop, but the extra circulation is useful all year. Hozelock notes that air pumps can also help prevent a pond from freezing in winter.

Pondkeeper, the Teesside pond specialist that has been selling online since 2005, stocks air pumps from several brands. This guide compares six of them, from a tiny 4W pump for a patio pond to a high-output diaphragm pump for koi, so you can match the pump to your pond size and stock.

    Hozelock 320: Small and Weatherproof

    Hozelock 320 pond air pump

Pondkeeper says the Hozelock 320 went straight to the top of its bestseller list when it launched in 2012. It is a fully weatherproof electric pump for very small ponds, using just 4W to deliver up to 320 litres of air an hour at depths of up to 1.2m. It can aerate a pond of 2,200 litres, or 1,800 litres with fish and 860 with koi. Two air stones, two non-return valves and 10m of air tube come in the box, and it has a 2-year guarantee. Larger 640, 1500 and 4500 models are also available.

PondXpert ElectroAir Compact: A Complete Starter Set

PondXpert ElectroAir Compact air pump with air line and air stones

The ElectroAir Compact range runs from the Compact 210 at £24.99 to the Compact 3600 at £139.99. The Compact 600 suits ponds up to 3,300 litres with fish, or 1,650 litres with koi, and uses 10W. Everything you need is included: two 5m air lines, two 50mm air stones and a two-way chrome manifold with taps, so you can fine-tune how much air each stone receives. It is IPX4 rated to sit outdoors near the pond and has a 2-year guarantee. See the ElectroAir Compact range.

PondXpert ElectroAir 2100: Quiet Power for Larger Ponds

PondXpert ElectroAir 2100 aluminium pond air pump

For bigger ponds, the ElectroAir 2100 steps up to 2,100 litres of air an hour from eight outlets and works at depths of up to 3m. Its heavy aluminium alloy casing has a double damping system to reduce noise and vibration, and a foam filter on top keeps debris out. It suits ponds of 11,600 litres with fish or 5,800 litres with koi. At the time of writing it was half its RRP at £109.99, with larger 2700, 3600, 4800 and 6000 models up to £179.99. Note that it carries a 1-year guarantee.

Blagdon Pond Oxygenator Kit: The Budget Choice

Blagdon Pond Oxygenator Kit air pump

Blagdon’s Pond Oxygenator Kit is the cheapest way to add air to a small pond. The Small kit costs £29.99, uses only 3.2W and comes with an air stone and 5m of air hose. It is fully weatherproof and rated for ponds up to 1,000 litres, or 740 litres with fish and 340 with koi. Standard and Medium kits at £39.99 and £67.99 cover larger ponds. The Small kit was out of stock when we checked, so sign up for a back-in-stock alert if it is the one you want.

Blagdon Pond Oxygenator 1800: Six Outlets

Blagdon Pond Oxygenator 1800 air pump with multi-outlet connector

The Blagdon Pond Oxygenator 1800 is a weatherproof outdoor pump delivering up to 1,800 litres of air an hour through six outlets via the included multi-outlet connector. It works to 2.2m deep, has a 5m power cable and a 3-year guarantee, and suits ponds of 10,000 litres with fish or 5,000 with koi. Unlike the kits, it is not supplied with air line or air stones, so add those to your basket. View the Blagdon 1800.

Evolution Aqua Airtech: For Serious Koi Keepers

Evolution Aqua Airtech diaphragm air pump

At the top of the range, Evolution Aqua’s Airtech diaphragm pumps are built for large koi ponds. The Airtech 130 uses 88W to produce up to 7,800 litres of air an hour, works to 4.7m and has thermal protection fitted as standard, with a 2-year guarantee. The range starts with the Airtech 70 complete kit at £184.95. Some units come with a two-pin plug, and Evolution Aqua advises that it can be wired into a safe, compliant outdoor electrical system with an RCD, using a qualified electrician if you are unsure.

How to Choose the Right Air Pump

    • Work out your pond volume first. Pondkeeper has a pond calculator on its website.
    • Check the fish and koi figures, not just the maximum pond size. The koi ratings are much lower for every pump.
    • Make sure the pump’s maximum operating depth exceeds the depth of your air stones.
    • Count the outlets you need, as each outlet feeds its own air line and air stone.
    • Choose a weatherproof model if it will sit outside, and use a safe outdoor electrical connection with an RCD.

    Solar Options and Accessories

If running a cable to the pond is not practical, Pondkeeper also sells solar air pumps such as the PondXpert SolarAir Float Pump shown at the top of this guide, which was listed at £39.99 with an RRP of £79.99. You can also buy spare air stones, air line and the ElectroAir accessories kit separately. Pondkeeper offers free delivery on orders over £79.

    Conclusion

For a small patio or wildlife pond, the Hozelock 320 or a Blagdon kit is plenty. The ElectroAir Compact 600 is a neat all-in-one set for mid-sized fish ponds, while the ElectroAir 2100 and Blagdon 1800 suit larger ponds. Serious koi keepers should look at the Evolution Aqua Airtech range. Whichever you choose, check your pond volume and the fish and koi ratings before you buy. Shop pond air pumps at Pondkeeper.
