No Socket? No Problem: Wire-Free Christmas Lights from Coopers of Stortford

Three pre-lit pop up slimline Christmas trees with baubles and bows

Every December the same problem comes back: there are never enough plug sockets where you want festive lights. Windowsills, front doors, hallway tables and the far end of the garden rarely have a socket nearby, and trailing extension leads are both untidy and a trip hazard.

The answer is lighting that runs on batteries or the sun. Coopers of Stortford, the UK home and garden retailer, sells a range of wire-free festive lights. We picked six that were listed as in stock when we checked on 4 November 2026, covering indoors, the front door and the garden. Prices and offers change often, so confirm them on the site before ordering.

Customer ratings shown on the product pages at the time ranged from 4.1 to 4.7 out of 5. Standard UK delivery was listed at £5.99, with next working day delivery at £7.99.

Pre-Lit Pop Up Slimline Christmas Tree

Pictured at the top, this tree is the most unusual item here. Coopers says it arrives fully decorated with baubles, bows and lights: you attach the stand to the central pole and pull the tree up, with no tools needed. It runs on 3 AA batteries and folds flat for storage. The 4ft version has 20 baubles, 20 bows and 40 micro light tips; the 5ft has 25, 25 and 50; and the 6ft has 30, 30 and 60. Its slim shape suits hallways, landings and small flats where a full tree will not fit. It was rated 4.1 from 29 reviews.

    Gold LED Candle Arch

Gold LED candle arch glowing on a windowsill

The candle arch is a classic Christmas window decoration, and this one is battery powered, so it can sit on any windowsill. Each of its 33 columns is topped with a small LED, arranged in two graduated rows for a 3D effect. It takes 3 AA batteries, which are not included. A silver version is also sold at the same price. The gold arch was rated 4.7 from 63 reviews.

    Light Up Poinsettia Wreath

Light up poinsettia wreath with red bows hanging on a wooden door

A lit wreath on the front door is a lovely welcome, but front doors almost never have a socket. This 40cm wreath combines poinsettia blooms, baubles, bows and fir cones on evergreen foliage, with 15 LEDs and no wires. It needs 3 AA batteries (not supplied).

Solar String Lights for the Garden

Warm white solar string lights wrapped around a garden pergola at night

For the garden, solar is the easy option. The 100 LED warm white string is 11.9m long, and Coopers says the lights charge by day, switch on at dusk and are weatherproof, with 8 lighting effects including static and twinkling. It was rated 4.7 from 13 reviews.

Multicolour solar string lights on a garden pergola at night

If you need to cover a pergola, a long hedge or several trees, the 200 LED multicolour version is 21.9m long with the same 8 effects. Both strings were on a buy one get one free offer when we checked. Remember that solar lights rely on daylight, which is short in December, so put the panel in the sunniest spot you have.

Set of 6 Red LED Candles

Set of red flameless LED pillar candles of different heights

For fireplaces and window ledges, these pillar candles are made of real wax but use flickering LEDs instead of wicks, with a “melted” top. There are six heights from 5cm to 23cm, each with an on/off switch on the base, and the batteries are supplied. With no naked flame, they are a safer choice around children, pets and curtains.

Battery or Solar: Which Should You Choose?

Battery lights are the better choice indoors and in sheltered spots such as porches, because they work the same on a grey day as a bright one. Their downside is the ongoing cost of batteries, especially if a decoration is left on for several hours every evening through December. Solar lights cost nothing to run once bought and suit open gardens, fences and pergolas, but in midwinter they depend on how much daylight the panel catches, so the glow may be shorter after a dull day.

Many households mix the two: battery pieces for windows, doors and tables, and solar strings outside. As every item here avoids mains cables, you can also move them around freely until you find the look you like, and pack them away just as easily in January.

    Tips for Wire-Free Lighting

    • Stock up on AA batteries before December: three of these items use 3 AA cells each.
    • Rechargeable AA batteries cut long-term costs and waste.
    • Switch battery decorations off at night to make the batteries last longer.
    • Angle solar panels south where possible and clear any leaves or snow.
    • Check the product page for current stock, as festive lines can sell out.

    Final Thoughts

Wire-free lights let you decorate the places sockets cannot reach. The pop up tree and candle arch suit indoor spaces, the wreath brightens the front door, and the solar strings handle the garden. You can browse the full Coopers of Stortford Christmas range for more ideas.
