AXA Assistance, the travel assistance arm of the AXA group, sells travel insurance in Spain through its site AXA Seguro de Viaje. The site is in Spanish and prices are in euros, so it is aimed at people booking from Spain. If you live there but are more comfortable reading English, the plan names and limits can take a little decoding.
This guide translates the key parts, using information shown on the AXA Seguro de Viaje website on 2 November 2026. Always check the policy conditions and eligibility on the site before you buy, as this is a summary, not advice.

The Three International Plans Compared
For trips abroad, AXA offers three levels of its Seguro de viaje Internacional. Prices are per person per day and depend on your trip.
| Cover | Mini | Total | Total Plus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price from (per day) | EUR 1.48 | EUR 2.74 | EUR 3.57 |
| Medical expenses abroad | up to EUR 50,000 | up to EUR 500,000 | up to EUR 5,000,000 |
| Emergency dental | EUR 30 | EUR 100 | EUR 200 |
| Lost or stolen luggage | EUR 50 per item, up to EUR 500 | EUR 150 per item, up to EUR 1,500 | EUR 200 per item, up to EUR 1,500 |
| Luggage delay | up to EUR 50 | up to EUR 300 | up to EUR 300 |
| Personal liability | up to EUR 10,000 | up to EUR 30,000 | up to EUR 60,000 |
| Optional cancellation limit | EUR 1,000 per person | EUR 3,000 per person | EUR 5,000 per person |
All three include medical repatriation at real cost, video medical consultations and EUR 3,000 for legal defence abroad, according to AXA’s comparison table. AXA labels Total as the most chosen option and suggests Total Plus for trips to the USA or Japan.

Spanish Terms You Will See
- Gastos medicos: medical expenses.
- Repatriacion sanitaria: medical repatriation, bringing you home after illness or injury.
- Perdida o robo de equipaje: lost or stolen luggage.
- Demora de equipaje: delayed luggage.
- Regreso anticipado: early return, for example if a relative is hospitalised.
- Gastos de anulacion: cancellation costs for a trip that has not started.
- Responsabilidad civil: personal liability.
- Franquicia: excess. AXA says its international policies have no excess.

Adding Cancellation: Mind the 7 Day Rule
Cancellation cover is optional on the international plans. With it, the daily price starts at EUR 1.83 for Mini, EUR 3.93 for Total and EUR 5.24 for Total Plus. AXA says it covers more than 20 reasons for cancelling, including serious illness, death and legal reasons.
Timing matters. AXA states that cancellation cover should be bought within 7 days of booking your trip. If you buy it later, a 72 hour waiting period applies from when the policy is issued, and it must always be bought before you travel. The practical lesson is to buy insurance the same week you book flights or accommodation.

Is the EHIC Enough in Europe?
Spanish residents can use the Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea, the Spanish version of the European Health Insurance Card, in EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. AXA’s site lists its limits: it does not cover emergencies in private hospitals, planned treatment, medical evacuation or repatriation, or hotel and transport costs if you need care, and it offers no protection for cancellation, lost luggage or liability.
AXA also gives example costs of treatment abroad without insurance, such as EUR 1,500 for a basic emergency visit in the United States and EUR 6,000 for a day in hospital there. These are AXA’s own estimates, but they show why medical limits matter more than luggage limits when comparing plans.

Other AXA Plans Worth Knowing
- Seguro de viaje por Espana: for trips within Spain, from EUR 0.98 a day, with medical expenses up to EUR 50,000 and cancellation included up to EUR 1,000.
- Seguro de viaje Anual: annual multi-trip cover with cancellation always included, which AXA suggests if you travel more than twice a year.
- Seguro de viaje Schengen: designed for visitors who need a policy for a Schengen visa, from EUR 2.66 a day.
- Student and business plans, including business cover for teams of 1 to 10 employees.

What AXA Says About Its Network
AXA highlights its own assistance network rather than a third party: it says it has more than 60 years of experience in international travel assistance, more than 30,000 medical providers in over 200 countries, AXA offices in more than 50 countries, and over 20,000 medical repatriations handled each year. It also says assistance is available 24/7 in your language, which is worth noting if Spanish is not your first language. For help before buying, the site lists the phone number 931 22 83 57.
Offers and Extras on 2 November 2026
AXA’s site was showing 15% off for trips of more than 6 days to the United States, Canada and Japan on the Total and Total Plus options, applied automatically, and a code, CANCELA15, for policies with cancellation included. International plans also included a free eSIM with 2 days of data, up to 1 GB, with discounts on larger data plans until 31 December. Offers can change, so confirm them in the quote.
How to Choose
For a short European city break where you also hold the EHIC, Mini may be enough for basic medical and luggage cover. For longer trips or family holidays, Total offers ten times the medical limit for a modest increase. For the USA or Japan, where medical costs are high, AXA itself points to Total Plus. International policies run from 1 day up to 6 months, and AXA says you get your certificate instantly. You can compare the prices for your dates using the AXA travel insurance calculator, or read the full cover table on the AXA international plans page.
